Antique Chinese Yuan Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Jar
This extremely rare Yuan Dynasty blue and white jar features a design that is unusual in the field of ancient Chinese pottery. Its base begins with a small foot which gives way to graceful arches with defined edges. Along the body, painted in rich blue tones of the imported Persian cobalt blue tone, is the splendid image of two warriors fiercely portrayed on a horseback.
The first is a warrior with a dao sword, the most representative weapon of the Chinese army, and the second is a Mongolian warrior with a lance held high. This portrait takes on special importance since it was created in an era marked by the result of the Mongolian invasions and the control over the imperial China. Therefore, what this jar teaches is not only an exquisite illustration, but a piece of ancient Mongolian propaganda. Above the warriors are superb detailed floral surrounded by curled stems and leaves, which make way for a delicate neck decorated with rhomboid scroll work and flowers with a dotted center.
